FIREHOUSE GALLERY 35 Railroad Street Falls Village Connecticut
For the Economic Development Committee of the Town of Falls Village, Connecticut, we prepared this schematic design to retrofit and repurpose the decommissioned firehouse at the center of town into a regional/municipal art gallery in coordination with NW-CT Arts Council. The program focused on the public display of local and world class artists who have studios in the surrounding Litchfield Hills region. Our concept focused on replacing the firehouse's coiling doors with insulated/arched bifold doors, adding visual transparency and character to pedestrians as well as abundant north light. Additionally, alterations to the roofline with bracketed cornice and related facade millwork is a nod to the historic district setting, while the iconic roof vents echo those found on Connecticut tobacco barns. The parking area seen to the left adjoining the Falls Village Inn would become a trellised garden court serving outdoor art shows, musical performances and public gatherings throughout the spring and summer months.
